Astronomy First
Mojave Desert Astronomy Club was created around a simple idea: astronomy should be about enjoying the night sky, not about meetings, committees, obligations, or bureaucracy.
MDAC is a group of people who share a fascination with the universe and want a place to come together under dark skies. Some of us have been interested in astronomy for years. Others are just beginning to explore the hobby. What we have in common is a desire to look up, learn something, and enjoy the experience with other people.
That's it.
A Different Kind of Astronomy Club
We don't want MDAC to become another organization where membership comes with a list of obligations.
There are no required volunteer hours. No mandatory meetings. No expectation that you attend every event. No requirement to own a telescope. No pressure to participate in anything you don't want to do.
If you want to come out and observe every clear night, we're happy to have you. If you only make it to a few events a year, that's fine too. If you would rather spend an evening looking through someone else's telescope than setting up your own, that's exactly what telescopes are for.
Membership is about being part of the community, not fulfilling an obligation to it.
No Equipment Required
You don't need a telescope to be an astronomer.
You don't even need binoculars.
The night sky is available to everyone. MDAC is intended to be a place where newcomers can learn from experienced observers, experienced observers can share what they know, and everyone can enjoy the sky regardless of what equipment they happen to own.
Bring a telescope if you have one. Bring binoculars if you have them. Bring a chair and look up with your own eyes. Or simply come along and see what everyone else is looking at.
Where MDAC Came From
Mojave Desert Astronomy Club grew out of the experiences of The Telescope Guys . What started as a small group of friends sharing telescopes, observing together, and bringing astronomy to the community eventually led to a bigger idea: create a dedicated astronomy club where people could simply come together to enjoy the hobby.
Why the Mojave?
The Mojave Desert offers something astronomers have always valued: darkness.
Away from the glow of major cities, the High Desert provides wide horizons and opportunities to experience a night sky that can be difficult to find elsewhere in Southern California.
We want to enjoy those skies while helping protect them. That means keeping unnecessary lights out of the observing area, practicing good observing etiquette, respecting the land, and leaving our observing sites as we found them.
What We Do
There is no complicated list of programs that defines MDAC.
We observe.
We learn.
We share.
Sometimes that means spending a quiet night at a dark-sky site looking through telescopes. Sometimes it means helping someone find their first planet. Sometimes it means gathering around a large Dobsonian to see something that most people never get the opportunity to see.
And sometimes it just means sitting outside with good friends and watching the stars.
Participation Is Your Choice
MDAC is intentionally designed to be low-pressure.
There are no participation requirements and no expectation that members contribute a certain number of hours or attend a certain number of events. Members are free to participate as much or as little as they want.
If you have knowledge to share, share it. If you want to help with an event, help. If you simply want to spend a night under the stars, that's perfectly okay too.
Come when you can. Stay as long as you like. Look at what interests you.
Keeping It Simple
We believe organizations tend to become more complicated over time. Committees create more committees. Rules create more rules. Eventually, the organization can become more focused on running itself than on the reason it existed in the first place.
We don't want that for MDAC.
The club needs enough structure to operate responsibly, maintain our observing locations, protect our members, and keep the lights on, but no more than necessary.
The goal is not to build a large organization. The goal is to build a good astronomy club.
From TelescopeGuys to MDAC
TelescopeGuys
will continue doing what it has always done, sharing astronomy
with the community and providing opportunities for people to
experience the night sky.
MDAC takes that idea one step further by creating a dedicated
community for people who want astronomy to be a regular part
of their lives.
The two are separate, but complementary. TelescopeGuys can
continue its outreach and astronomy activities while MDAC
provides a place for astronomers to come together as a club.
Our Values

Why We Do This
Because there is still something special about standing outside on a dark night, looking through a telescope, and realizing that the faint smudge in the eyepiece is another galaxy millions of light-years away.
Because seeing Saturn's rings for the first time never gets old.
Because the night sky belongs to everyone.
And because sometimes the best thing you can do is simply look up.
